Bruckner’s choral music is often overlooked due to his overwhelming symphonic compositions, but it can never be forgotten that most of his career was spent as a church organist and choirmaster. This Holy Week motet is graphically atmospheric regarding the sacrifice of Jesus leading up to his crucifixion and death, stopping short of his triumphant resurrection.
Created for the Mount Union Brass Choir and Carl H. Kandel after gaining more experience as an arranger and teacher, this transcription was performed at the Washington National Cathedral and at the 1988 MUC Brass Choir Reunion concert.
