The choral music of Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) is often overlooked due to his mammoth symphonic compositions, but it can never be forgotten that most of his career was spent as a church organist and choirmaster. This Holy Week motet is graphically atmospheric regarding the sacrifice of Jesus leading up to his crucifixion and death, stopping short of his triumphant resurrection. I was fortunate to have been one of the first undergraduates to ever conduct at a national convention of the American Choral Directors Association and this was the choral work I conducted.
I transcribed Christus factus est for the Mount Union Brass Choir and Carl H. Kandel after having gained more experience as an arranger and teacher. The transcription was performed at the Washington National Cathedral around 1980 and also at the 1988 MUC Brass Choir Reunion concert. It remains one of my favorite pieces of music.
